Special Notes:
Constructivist vs. Instructivist.
You are being asked to design a Constructivist lesson. The lesson will be interactive. The participants will be part of “Constructing” their own knowledge. This will be a big part of their healing. It will build community.
Instructivist teaching is the old school “Sage on the Stage” model. The teacher talks – the participants listen. That style will not meet our ACW mission nor our promise to our partners.

Objective(s): What will the participants be able to learn or know. Make sure this includes any trauma curriculum modifications. Participants will to be able to use an expressive media to help heal from trauma. It is the process not the product. However, one part of our mission is also to encourage participants to embrace their creative potential and empower THEM to make art… just like we do!
Suggestion: Before you start: Ask them to share a triumph or a challenge from the last week as they come in. So much better than sitting in silence. OR ask them which artwork they see is their favorite- and why. OR As we progress… ask them to bring a favorite artwork and show and tell.
Snappy Launch: Make this an attention getter. Why should they keep listening? Ask a provocative question. Show them an amazing thing.
Introduction: What will YOU do to introduce the lesson? Make sure the participants are given permission for this lesson to move beyond just what is a called a “production” lesson. Your objective should be way beyond “we will make a painting”. Ask a provocative question for them to consider. What would that question be? Sandra can help us with this.
