SUMMARY:Internal Nomad- Suyao Tian at Hallberg Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Internal Nomad\n\nHallberg Center for the Arts\n5521 East Viking Blvd\, Wyoming\, MN  55092\, (651) 272-5122\nOpening Reception: \, July 22nd Thursday 4pm-8pm\nAbout the Show:\nSuyao Tian living and working in the twin cities as an artist\, designer and independent curator\,  She had a double BFA degree in fine art and music education\, and MFA in design from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Painting is her own language to connect to the world\, and her way to find and connect the similarities in our soul that we all share.\nShe creates a unique style of watercolor painting\, mainly using watercolor medium while also using mixed media with different pen marks to define the details of each painting to give the audience layers and depth of the painting.\nHer creative process is to extract the fragments of memory and separate\, reorganize and integrate them. This process is her communication with them\, and a process of self-release and expression. These peculiar images often appear in her memory\, dreams and subconscious imaginations\, so she uses abstraction to catch a moment\, feeling\, and unclear form when they appear in her mind.\n“I creates a peaceful and safe space that invites all people’s mind to wander and explore but is not an overtly symbolic object to suggest the direction.”   ——Suyao \n‘I believe inspiring people to find themselves is the most important function of her work and its place within society. This introspection is critical to society because no one is capable of full peace and love for others without first understanding themselves\, and it is her hope that her works provide such a peace to all who see it”    —– Suyao

SUMMARY:Jodi Reeb - Painting Toward Sculpture Reception
DESCRIPTION:Moving between two and three-dimensional forms\, Reeb is constructing paintings and sculptures layer by layer. There are three main bodies of work in this exhibition where she is exploring the theme of nature’s cycles with image and sculpture. She is working to develop scale\, geometry\, spatial relationships\, texture\, and color. \n  \nThese works challenge the visual properties of paintings and sculptures with translucency and dimensionality. Strong physical elements come from layering and texture using Encaustic paint (beeswax\, pigment\, and damar resin) while layering photos printed on tissue with oil pigments and elevating the organic paintings from the wall. \n  \nPainting Toward Sculpture\nAugust 20–October 10\nSt. John’s University Main and Target Galleries\nReception:  Thursday\, September 2\, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Opening: "inside my hands: the covid year" - dougie padilla
DESCRIPTION:SEPTEMBER’S GALLERY SHOW AT HOMEWOOD STUDIOS \n  \n“inside my hands: the covid year”\ndrawings and poems by dougie padilla \nOpening reception – Friday\, September 10th from 6pm to 9pm \ndougie will offer a poetry reading on Tuesday\, September 28th at 7pm. \n  \n  \nOur third show since reopening the gallery after Covid continues artwork that expresses itself in vibrant colors\, exuberant gestures and inviting vistas.  The drawings and poetry broadsides by dougie padilla do just that.  As his title suggests\, the work presented was produced during our time of covid and seem an antidote to the sequestering and darkness we all experienced. \n  \nAbout his work\, padilla writes: \n1) during the covid year I went dynamite creative nuts more than ever and painted and drew and wrote poems intensely and incessantly and obsessively about this quite insane and oft delightful world we live in\, and  \n  \n2) this show of drawings and poems are just the tip of that iceberg. \nPlease note:  Plymouth Avenue\, where Homewood Studios lives\, is currently undergoing a complete rebuilding and is more or less impassable.  Please go to our website – www.homewoodstudiods.com – for current driving and parking directions.

SUMMARY:Forgotten Beacons: Artist Reception and Public Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Artist: Jayson Randall \nEvent: Artist Reception and public unveiling\nDate/Time: Thursday\, September 16\, 2021\, 6-8pm\nLocation: University of Minnesota – Larson Gallery\, 2017 Buford Avenue\, #25-A. St Paul\, MN 55108 \nEvent Link: https://www.jaysonrandall.com/events.html \nEvent Description: In-person reception party \nTitle of Artwork Displayed: Artist reception party and release of two new original interactive works of art \nPrice: This event is free and open to the public \n  \nArtwork Description: \nThe Paul Whitney Larson Gallery at the University of Minnesota has been transformed to accommodate the interactive artwork of Minnesota based experimental artist Jayson Randall. \nThe gallery lights have been dimmed to accentuate the illumination of the art and the pieces are spaced out to allow for individual exploration. \nNormally\, gallery guests are not allowed to touch or interact with the artwork; \nForgotten Beacons is different. \nMany of the works of art react to external stimulation. \nJayson Randall encourages guests to interact with his artwork\, by pressing buttons on some pieces and by making noises at others. \nFrom August 26 thru September 24\, 2021\, several of Jayson’s unique works of art will be on display during regular gallery hours as well as for an artist’s reception on September 16\, 2021\, from 6-8 pm. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n  \n“When I close my eyes\, I see bright colors.” \nThrough Jayson Randall’s brilliant interplay of light and shadow in art\, “Forgotten Beacons” illustrates the relationship between the useful and forgotten. Like beacons in the dark\, his work expresses how discarded items call out as they are encountered. He preserves stories and gives new life to those forgotten through the use of technology. Industrial materials are combined with interactive electronics as the viewer is engaged to participate in the functionality of the finished work. \nJayson Randall is an award-winning experimental artist who currently resides in Minnesota. \nAwards include the Director’s Award at the WHAM West Gallery in Surprise\, Arizona\, the Best in Show Award at the Re-Purpose Competition in Clear Lake\, Iowa\, and the Special Recognition Award at the 2020 Tenth Anniversary Exhibition at the Light Space Time Gallery in Palm Springs\, California. \nJayson designs and builds complex works of art that fuse technology with illusion. \nWhether creating interactive electronic sculptures\, making innovative films\, or attempting a novel method of painting\, his work bridges the gap between art and science. \nMore Information: \nhttps://www.jaysonrandall.com/ \nand \nhttps://sua.umn.edu/events/forgotten-beacons

It aims to bring together artists\, performers\, poets\, entrepreneurs\, civic leaders\, and the local community for important conversations about justice and equity. \n  \nSOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2021 follows the success of last year’s event\, which sought to unite the community amid the isolation and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a national reckoning with racial injustice. We find solidarity in coming together as a neighborhood and business community through art\, performance\, and poetry\, and jointly engaging in the search for solutions to a fractured society. This year’s event will focus on the topics of Indigenous Sovereignty & Environmental Justice\, centered on Native voices. The community can participate in the dialogue on these topics through curated art exhibits\, music & performances\, community and children’s activities\, and an eco-park that highlights local environmental innovations. \n \nSOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY is an open invitation for everyone to celebrate and appreciate the multitude of cultural\, racial\, and ethnic communities who call the Eastside home. This year’s intentional focus on the Native community is possible through partnership with Oyate Hotanin (“Voice of the People”) who will collaborate on a large-scale art installation\, performances\, and curating gallery exhibits. The festival will highlight Native sacred sites\, history\, and traditions\, as well as explore modern culture and identity of Dakota and other local Native people. We will explore key ideas of Cognitive Justice and recognize the plurality of knowledge forms which coexist. Our eco-exhibit looks to inspire event visitors to envision a ‘Just Transition’ to responsible and sustainable environmental stewardship as well as preservation of traditional lands and sacred sites. \n \nOur SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2021 festival welcomes artists from all backgrounds to share their vision in our gallery spaces and performance stages along Payne Ave\, in partnership with the Eastside business community. There will be public calls for artists and performers to participate. There will also be a public call for vendors\, to sell food as well as arts & crafts in street-side marketplaces. Last but not least\, there will a call for volunteers from the community. They will be playing a critical role in making this entire festival possible. \nSee link for more info: https://www.solidaritystreetgallery.org/

SUMMARY:Broadcast Premiere of The Co-Op Wars
DESCRIPTION:THE CO-OP WARS has its broadcast premiere on TPT Channel 2.   8 pm\, Oct. 4.  \nThe documentary tells the story of the birth of the Twin Cities’ unique food co-op ecosystem and the violent struggle that almost tore it apart.  \nMinneapolis\, MN (Sept. 20\, 2021) – In the midst of an era of social tumult in the Twin Cities\, a new film tells the little-known story of an earlier moment of political conflict in the metro area\, when young radicals went to war with each other over issues of class\, race\, and food. THE CO-OP WARS documents the tumultuous early years of the Twin Cities’ natural food co-op movement\, when young people radicalized by the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War built a thriving alternative economy\, only to see it jeopardized by conflicting visions of social change. \nTHE CO-OP WARS will have its Twin Cities broadcast premiere on Twin Cities Public Television Channel 2 at 8 pm on October 4. The film was directed by Minneapolis filmmaker and ACW member Deacon Warner\, produced by cooperative activist and former Minnesotan Erik Esse\, and narrated by renowned actor Peter Coyote\, known for his work on Ken Burns documentaries such as The Vietnam War. \nMany Minnesota residents are unaware of how unique the region’s food cooperative sector is. It’s the largest in the nation\, with the Twin Cities alone boasting seventeen locations\, tens of thousands of member-owners\, and hundreds of millions of dollars in sales. It also has a unique history: Soon after an initial period of explosive growth in the early 1970s\, the “Co-op Wars” erupted in the Twin Cities\, a heated and sometimes violent conflict initiated by a secretive Marxist group calling itself the Co-op Organization or C.O. THE CO-OP WARS tells this story through interviews with the participants and personal film footage and links it to the more recent controversy around the opening of Seward Co-op’s Friendship store in South Minneapolis. \nThe soundtrack of THE CO-OP WARS is largely made up of songs from Minnesota music legend Willie Murphy. Murphy\, who passed away in 2019\, was known for his solo work\, his band Willie & the Bees\, and his collaborations with Bonnie Raitt and Spider John Koerner. A fixture of the West Bank counterculture of the 1970s\, Murphy was the headliner at the “Anti- Terrorism Benefit Boogie” for Bryant-Central Co-op after it was attacked during the Co-op Wars.\nIn addition to appearing in films such as Erin Brockovich and narrating eight documentaries by Ken Burns\, Narrator Peter Coyote was also a leader of the 1960s counterculture that birthed the natural foods co-ops. He was one of the founders of The Diggers\, an anarchic San Francisco collective known for their street actions involving free food and performance\, which helped inspire the Twin Cities hippies who started the first co-ops. \nProducer Erik Esse and Director Deacon Warner were inspired to make THE CO-OP WARS out of their shared love of co-ops\, history\, and documentary filmmaking. Esse is a long-time cooperator who worked at North Country Cooperative Grocery (the first natural foods co-op in the Twin Cities) and as an organizer of the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives. Warner has made many short films that have been screened at festivals around the world\, including Peaceful Warriors: On the Road with Vets for Peace. He is a film educator and founder of the youth program at FilmNorth in Minneapolis. Find more information at CoopWars.com.

SUMMARY:Blood on The Pavement - Proposals Due
DESCRIPTION:“Blood on the Pavement”: An Open Call For Artists\nPoet\, artist\, and Coaching Project for a Better World Project Manager\,  Ashley Richardson\, believes all art has immediate social\, political\, and cultural power. She also believes in using this power to spark conversation and catalyze change. With help from team members\, and funding through ACW’s Coaching Project for a Better World\, Richardson will create an art exhibit for the greater Twin Cities area tentatively titled\, “Blood on The Pavement.” \nThe exhibit\, scheduled to open May 2022\, is seeking artists to collaborate with and feature. \nThose interested in exhibiting with “Blood on the Pavement\,” or learning more about this project\, can email richardson.exhibits@gmail.com.\n“Blood on The Pavement” will focus on addressing violence against black bodies\, both verbally and physically\, from microaggressions to police brutality. However\, in its early stages\, there is still room to be surprised. A believer that art should never end where it began\, Richardson is open to exploring other meanings behind the phrase “blood on the pavement\,” with a particular interest in violence against women’s bodies and marginalized communities. Through collaboration with her ACW team and potential exhibiting artists\, Richardson hopes to see this project unfold in unexpected new ways. \nFor this project\, Richardson will write a series of 5 to 10 poems exploring the social injustices mentioned above and asks that artists use these poems as a jumping-off point for their artwork. Please note there is no “correct” interpretation of the poems. Richardson is solely interested that artists create pieces (as they see fit) to express the feelings and thoughts inspired by her words. Artists will receive small stipends to help cover and/or offset the costs of materials\, with a possibility for additional payments depending on budgets. Richardson is seeking artists from a range of mediums\, i.e. sculpture\, painting\, mixed media\, collage\, printmaking\, sound\, and more. \nIf you would like to learn more about this project\, or have leads on potential venues\, please email richardson.exhibits@gmail.com. Artists interested in exhibiting with “Blood on the Pavement” should send 3 to 4 sample pieces\, along with a brief (4 to 5 sentences) statement of interest by November 1\, 2021.

SUMMARY:Native American Heritage Month Begins
DESCRIPTION:By Laura-Mann-Hill Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator. \n \nI live near Haha Wakpa\, the Mississippi River\, that connects all waters and all lives where we live. The river is made of many small drops that flow together – like our individual commitments to learning and unlearning can bring us together. \n  \nNovember is Native American Heritage Month. Although one month is never enough time to fully celebrate or honor any cultural heritage\, it is always a reminder to celebrate and honor the rich and diverse cultures and traditions\, knowledge\, and contributions of Indigenous people. Those who call Minnesota home live on the traditional homelands of the Dakota people who have stewarded this place for thousands of years. It has been home to and cared for and by many other Indigenous nations\, including the Ojibwe and the HoChunk. I continue my ongoing journey to incorporate more practices into my life that affirm Indigenous sovereignty and Black Liberation. I recently emerged from an experience exploring this topic hosted by Million Artist Movement which included a talk with Dr. Chris Mato Nunpa: https://youtu.be/ppEpVBrgQCo \n  \n“Everyone has a responsibility to divest from anti-Blackness and to respect Indigenous sovereignty (and specifically tribal sovereignty). And for those who carry the political\, legal\, and social currency of whiteness and benefit from these systems that oppress and attempts to stifle the future of Black\, Indigenous\, and other people of color\, I believe it is their responsibility to use their currency to dismantle said systems with the intention of forfeiting their privilege and positionality within this hierarchy.” \n – Amber Starks \nWe must acknowledge land theft and genocide; learn more about the land we reside on – learn the names of places that are not colonized. Learn about land reparations and how we can honor treaties – and take action in movements like to Stop Line 3 to protect the river and us all! \n(Quilt square created by Friends Mississippi River Youth Council member with Million Artist Movement) \nMore Resources:  \nStop Line 3: tinyurl.com/ResistLine3 \nHonor Treaties: http://treatiesmatter.org/exhibit/welcome/learn-more/ \nMní Wičhóni Mural: \nhttps://fmr.org/stewardship-updates/fmr-fifth-water-quality-mural-celebrates-community-connections-water \nAll My Relations Arts: biskaabiiyang (returning to ourselves) group exhibition investigating Indigenous Futurism http://www.allmyrelationsarts.com/ \nNever Homeless Before 1492: \nhttps://indiancountrytoday.com/news/never-homeless-before-1492 \nReclaiming Native Truth: https://youtu.be/SW-nYYY89D0 \nSay It!
