SUMMARY:Club Critique Launches
DESCRIPTION:ACW Launches Club Critique\nBy Greg Volker \nIntroducing Club Critique! ACW will be starting a critique group for all who are interested in a place for safe but rigorous discussion of their work. You will be able to join the CC on the ACW website and once you have become a member you can start taking part in the critiques of others work and when you have attended 3 critiques you will be eligible to have your work reviewed. Locations will vary and will mostly be in the studio of the artist being critiqued but if you are unable to accommodate a visit to your studio we will help set up a location for you. If you have a publicly placed piece you would like critiqued we can go to that location as well.\nYou do not need to be an artist to join Club Critique! We encourage art writers and reviewers as well as art lovers to join.\nThere are 3 main goals of Club Critique:\n1- Have a place for honest\, open and rigorous critique with the goal of helping each other to make the best work we can.\n2- Elevate our ability to write\, discuss and articulate our works which will improve our quality of proposals\, artist statements\, and other areas where we need to verbalize our works.\n3- Develop and refine critique methodologies and practices to improve critique’s ability to accomplish goal #1. \nThis will be a place where you can get open and honest opinions and conversation about your work. Refine and develop your abilities to discuss your\, and others\, work. Critiques will have a moderator to ensure the environment remains focused and rigorous but safe and supportive. \nRegistration will be open In February!\nCost of 1 year membership is $100 (assistance is available if needed)\nCritique sessions will begin in April 2022 \nContact project manager Greg Volker for information or to join his committee. gregvolkerarts@gmail.com\nLogo by Cory Favre

SUMMARY:Black History Month Begins
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Black History Month \n  \nBy Laura Mann-Hill -ACW Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator \nPower Tree Quilt by Million Artist Movement\, a Black-led artist cooperative.  \nPhoto: David Schnack \n  \n“If you know the beginning well\, the outcome will not trouble you.” African Proverb \n  \nFeb. 1\, 1926 – What is now known as Black History Month was first celebrated on this date as Negro History Week by Carter G. Black Liberation is rooted in our knowledge of self. No matter how you choose to honor Black History Month\, there are many stories and layers of resistance\, joy\, pain\, genius\, and beauty to learn about and celebrate every day of the year. SUMMARY:The Barn Quilt Project: South Dakota Strong Begins
DESCRIPTION:The Barn Quilt Project: South Dakota Strong \nACW member Rebecca Froehlich will join other trained artists in healthcare for a new project taking place in her home state of South Dakota. \nThe Barn Quilt Project: South Dakota Strong will reach nine communities across South Dakota\, including rural areas with lower vaccination rates. This winter\, community members who attend the art events will create a barn quilt design from decorative art materials and write about the year of the pandemic. Quiltmaking is a cross-cultural tradition in South Dakota that represents home\, family\, comfort\, and history. The Barn Quilt Project connects familiar quilt patterns with stories of resilience from trusted messengers of vaccine information. The project is made possible by Creative Care LLC\, the Vermillion Cultural Association\, and the CDC Foundation. \nPlease follow their journey via Facebook: @barnquiltprojectSD and Instagram: @barnquiltprojectSD.

On this road trip\, I headed to Sleepy Eye\, MN where they have the nicest owners of Sleepy Eye stain glass shop. The drive takes a few hours to get there\, and I enjoy taking the single-lane county highways. The landscape is dotted with farmhouses\, newly planted crops\, gently rolling hills\, small creeks with forest groves. I was blessed with Bob Ross kind of clouds\, Horses greeting me to say good morning. \nThis scene captivated my eyes as the hint of lime green sprouts just breaking the jet-black soil accompanied the Seeds Mother Nature planted earlier in the Spring.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Material and Media Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Material and Media Exploration\nWork by MCAD Foundation Studies Students\nMarch 4-30\, 2022\nOpening Reception – Monday\, March 7th from 5pm to 8pm\n(light food and drinks provided) \nFor several years in the recent past\, we have been pleased and honored to host an MCAD Foundations Drawing show in our gallery. Covid-19 introduced a hiatus to that gallery practice a couple of years ago. Now\, we are happy to resume that series of shows\, this time featuring the work of all the genres addressed in the Foundations Program. Expect to see not only the more traditional 2D paintings and drawings\, but also 3D work on pedestals and medias pieces on screens placed around the gallery. Another important aspect to note\, all MCAD students take the Foundations classes\, regardless of their intended area of interest or focus. \nOne of the established goals of the Foundation Program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD)\, is to experiment with concepts\, materials and techniques\, and to build skill-sets in a variety of making processes. Most importantly\, the program encourages students to embrace risk-taking as an essential element of the creative process. This exhibition is a celebration of a selection of student work produced in the first semester (fall 2021) of the Foundation Studies Program at MCAD. Works produced range from 2D to 3D to 4D\, with various media and techniques\, all showing the versatility\, creativity\, and tenacity of the students as a whole. \n[Though restrictions\, mandates and advisories are slowly being relaxed\, Covid-19 is still with us\, and we request mask be worn for all gallery visits.]

SUMMARY:Ramadan Begins
DESCRIPTION:By Laura Mann-Hill  ACW Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator \nCurrently\, Muslims account for about 22% of the world’s population. The community will be fasting from sunup to sundown. Ramadan\, the holiest month of the Muslim calendar. \nRamadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and will fall during the month of April in 2022. The Islamic calendar does not align exactly with the Gregorian calendar\, Ramadan falls at a different time of year\, every year. When thinking about April many people also think about nature and earth month. Many Muslim scholars highlight how the Qur’an illustrates an eco-consciousness that infuses every aspect of life and explains nature as a complete\, complex\, interconnected and interdependent system. Many Indigenous cultures and religions all over the world center nature as an interconnected part of life and existence. \n  \nHere are a few resources: \n  \nhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/23286976 \n  \nhttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/what-is-ramadan-and-when-is-it/ \n  \nhttps://www.intersectionalenvironmentalist.com/ \n  \nhttps://hightowerlowdown.org/article/give-nature-a-seat-at-the-governing-table-rights-of-nature/
