SUMMARY: Structure + Connection - Reception
DESCRIPTION:Structure + Connection \nEncaustic Artwork by Jodi Reeb and Dietlind Vander Schaaf \nJune 26 – September 4\, 2021 \nArtist Reception: Saturday\, June 26\, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \n(MINNEAPOLIS\, MINNESOTA) Practicing within the same natural medium\, encaustic or beeswax\, with a visual language inspired by nature’s forms\, gallery artist\, Jodi Reeb\, and guest artist\, Dietlind Vander Schaaf of Portland\, Maine\, depart from each other and the traditions of encaustic painting in new work presented in Structure + Connection at Kolman & Pryor Gallery. Curated by Reeb and gallery co-founder and curator\, Patrick Pryor\, the exhibition opens Saturday evening\, June 26\, 2021\, with an artist reception from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The exhibition closes September 4\, 2021. \n“Jodi is evolving into quite a force in the encaustic community as she’s bridging the gap between sculpture and painting in her new work\,” Pryor says. “Dietland’s work is highly sought after and extremely popular with collectors. We’re thrilled to pair them in this show\, in which each one’s work not only complements the other’s but together their artwork demonstrates the versatility and breadth of the encaustic medium.” \nVander Schaaf describes herself as “very much a painter. I paint in a sculptural way\, in that I build up thick layers of encaustic\, then carve into those layers\, often with repetitive\, distinctive mark making\, to add further texture and sculptural dimension to the work.” \nA teacher and practitioner of such contemplative practices as yoga and meditation\, Vander Schaaf says her paintings are “abstracted landscapes\, as well as inner landscapes where the inner and outer world meet to describe a felt experience of the world.” She hopes viewers and collectors will find quietness and calm in her work. \nReeb’s organic wall sculptures oscillate between painting and sculpture. Her circular pieces\, referencing the spheres within nature\, often overlap creating a negative space also found in many of her aluminum wall sculptures. In these sculptures\, she paints with enamel and encaustic (beeswax and damar resin) on primed aluminum\, then bends and twists the metal into dramatically textured organic forms. Reeb’s intention with her sculptural series is to investigate a folding\, opening\, and evolving as a reflection of her new approach to encaustic artwork. \n“We’re both challenging the physical properties of translucence and structure using encaustic\,” Reeb explains. “At the same time\, we’re drawn to ideas of layering inspired by natural forms where the paintings are deconstructed as well as abstracted to create structure and connection.” \nThe artists will be teaching an encaustic workshop at the gallery on Friday and Saturday\, June 25 and 26\, 2021\, 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The cost of the workshop is $350. Please get in touch with Jodi Reeb at jodi@kolmanpryorgallery.com or at 612-247-1244 for more information. \nFor a preview of the show\, please contact Anita Sue Kolman at anita@kolmanpryorgallery.com or 612-385-4239 or Patrick Pryor at patrick@kolmanpryorgallery.com or 612-280-7812. \n—————– \n       Structure + Connection begins Saturday\, June 26\, 2021\, and closes Saturday\, September 4\, 2021. \nArtist Reception: Saturday\, June 26\, 2021\, 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. \nKolman & Pryor Gallery is located in Studio 395\, Northrup King Building at 1500 Jackson Street NE\, Minneapolis\, MN 55413. SUMMARY:Internal Nomad- Suyao Tian at Hallberg Center for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Internal Nomad\n\nHallberg Center for the Arts\n5521 East Viking Blvd\, Wyoming\, MN  55092\, (651) 272-5122\nOpening Reception: \, July 22nd Thursday 4pm-8pm\nAbout the Show:\nSuyao Tian living and working in the twin cities as an artist\, designer and independent curator\,  She had a double BFA degree in fine art and music education\, and MFA in design from Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Painting is her own language to connect to the world\, and her way to find and connect the similarities in our soul that we all share.\nShe creates a unique style of watercolor painting\, mainly using watercolor medium while also using mixed media with different pen marks to define the details of each painting to give the audience layers and depth of the painting.\nHer creative process is to extract the fragments of memory and separate\, reorganize and integrate them. This process is her communication with them\, and a process of self-release and expression. These peculiar images often appear in her memory\, dreams and subconscious imaginations\, so she uses abstraction to catch a moment\, feeling\, and unclear form when they appear in her mind.\n“I creates a peaceful and safe space that invites all people’s mind to wander and explore but is not an overtly symbolic object to suggest the direction.”   ——Suyao \n‘I believe inspiring people to find themselves is the most important function of her work and its place within society. This introspection is critical to society because no one is capable of full peace and love for others without first understanding themselves\, and it is her hope that her works provide such a peace to all who see it”    —– Suyao

SUMMARY:Jodi Reeb - Painting Toward Sculpture Reception
DESCRIPTION:Moving between two and three-dimensional forms\, Reeb is constructing paintings and sculptures layer by layer. There are three main bodies of work in this exhibition where she is exploring the theme of nature’s cycles with image and sculpture. She is working to develop scale\, geometry\, spatial relationships\, texture\, and color. \n  \nThese works challenge the visual properties of paintings and sculptures with translucency and dimensionality. Strong physical elements come from layering and texture using Encaustic paint (beeswax\, pigment\, and damar resin) while layering photos printed on tissue with oil pigments and elevating the organic paintings from the wall. \n  \nPainting Toward Sculpture\nAugust 20–October 10\nSt. John’s University Main and Target Galleries\nReception:  Thursday\, September 2\, 5:00-7:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Opening: "inside my hands: the covid year" - dougie padilla
DESCRIPTION:SEPTEMBER’S GALLERY SHOW AT HOMEWOOD STUDIOS \n  \n“inside my hands: the covid year”\ndrawings and poems by dougie padilla \nOpening reception – Friday\, September 10th from 6pm to 9pm \ndougie will offer a poetry reading on Tuesday\, September 28th at 7pm. \n  \n  \nOur third show since reopening the gallery after Covid continues artwork that expresses itself in vibrant colors\, exuberant gestures and inviting vistas.  The drawings and poetry broadsides by dougie padilla do just that.  As his title suggests\, the work presented was produced during our time of covid and seem an antidote to the sequestering and darkness we all experienced. \n  \nAbout his work\, padilla writes: \n1) during the covid year I went dynamite creative nuts more than ever and painted and drew and wrote poems intensely and incessantly and obsessively about this quite insane and oft delightful world we live in\, and  \n  \n2) this show of drawings and poems are just the tip of that iceberg. \nPlease note:  Plymouth Avenue\, where Homewood Studios lives\, is currently undergoing a complete rebuilding and is more or less impassable.  Please go to our website – www.homewoodstudiods.com – for current driving and parking directions.

SUMMARY:Forgotten Beacons: Artist Reception and Public Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Artist: Jayson Randall \nEvent: Artist Reception and public unveiling\nDate/Time: Thursday\, September 16\, 2021\, 6-8pm\nLocation: University of Minnesota – Larson Gallery\, 2017 Buford Avenue\, #25-A. St Paul\, MN 55108 \nEvent Link: https://www.jaysonrandall.com/events.html \nEvent Description: In-person reception party \nTitle of Artwork Displayed: Artist reception party and release of two new original interactive works of art \nPrice: This event is free and open to the public \n  \nArtwork Description: \nThe Paul Whitney Larson Gallery at the University of Minnesota has been transformed to accommodate the interactive artwork of Minnesota based experimental artist Jayson Randall. \nThe gallery lights have been dimmed to accentuate the illumination of the art and the pieces are spaced out to allow for individual exploration. \nNormally\, gallery guests are not allowed to touch or interact with the artwork; \nForgotten Beacons is different. \nMany of the works of art react to external stimulation. \nJayson Randall encourages guests to interact with his artwork\, by pressing buttons on some pieces and by making noises at others. \nFrom August 26 thru September 24\, 2021\, several of Jayson’s unique works of art will be on display during regular gallery hours as well as for an artist’s reception on September 16\, 2021\, from 6-8 pm. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n  \n“When I close my eyes\, I see bright colors.” \nThrough Jayson Randall’s brilliant interplay of light and shadow in art\, “Forgotten Beacons” illustrates the relationship between the useful and forgotten. Like beacons in the dark\, his work expresses how discarded items call out as they are encountered. He preserves stories and gives new life to those forgotten through the use of technology. Industrial materials are combined with interactive electronics as the viewer is engaged to participate in the functionality of the finished work. \nJayson Randall is an award-winning experimental artist who currently resides in Minnesota. \nAwards include the Director’s Award at the WHAM West Gallery in Surprise\, Arizona\, the Best in Show Award at the Re-Purpose Competition in Clear Lake\, Iowa\, and the Special Recognition Award at the 2020 Tenth Anniversary Exhibition at the Light Space Time Gallery in Palm Springs\, California. \nJayson designs and builds complex works of art that fuse technology with illusion. \nWhether creating interactive electronic sculptures\, making innovative films\, or attempting a novel method of painting\, his work bridges the gap between art and science. \nMore Information: \nhttps://www.jaysonrandall.com/ \nand \nhttps://sua.umn.edu/events/forgotten-beacons

SUMMARY:Solidarity Street Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Solidarity Street Gallery \nSeptember 23-25\, 2021\, Payne Avenue – St Paul\, Mni Sota Makoce \nA one-of-a-kind arts and cultural festival centered around justice\, equity and solidarity. \nThe SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY is a three-day art and cultural festival along Payne Avenue\, held this year September 23-25. All are invited and encouraged to participate. It aims to bring together artists\, performers\, poets\, entrepreneurs\, civic leaders\, and the local community for important conversations about justice and equity. \n  \nSOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2021 follows the success of last year’s event\, which sought to unite the community amid the isolation and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a national reckoning with racial injustice. We find solidarity in coming together as a neighborhood and business community through art\, performance\, and poetry\, and jointly engaging in the search for solutions to a fractured society. This year’s event will focus on the topics of Indigenous Sovereignty & Environmental Justice\, centered on Native voices. The community can participate in the dialogue on these topics through curated art exhibits\, music & performances\, community and children’s activities\, and an eco-park that highlights local environmental innovations. \n \nSOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY is an open invitation for everyone to celebrate and appreciate the multitude of cultural\, racial\, and ethnic communities who call the Eastside home. This year’s intentional focus on the Native community is possible through partnership with Oyate Hotanin (“Voice of the People”) who will collaborate on a large-scale art installation\, performances\, and curating gallery exhibits. The festival will highlight Native sacred sites\, history\, and traditions\, as well as explore modern culture and identity of Dakota and other local Native people. We will explore key ideas of Cognitive Justice and recognize the plurality of knowledge forms which coexist. Our eco-exhibit looks to inspire event visitors to envision a ‘Just Transition’ to responsible and sustainable environmental stewardship as well as preservation of traditional lands and sacred sites. \n \nOur SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2021 festival welcomes artists from all backgrounds to share their vision in our gallery spaces and performance stages along Payne Ave\, in partnership with the Eastside business community. There will be public calls for artists and performers to participate. There will also be a public call for vendors\, to sell food as well as arts & crafts in street-side marketplaces. Last but not least\, there will a call for volunteers from the community. They will be playing a critical role in making this entire festival possible. \nSee link for more info: https://www.solidaritystreetgallery.org/
