SUMMARY:Home: Nostalgia & Chaos - Chris Cinque (Opening)
DESCRIPTION:Home: Nostalgia & Chaos\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHome: Nostalgia and Chao \n\n\n\nNew collages and paintings by Chris Cinque\nMay 4-31\nOpening Reception – Saturday\, May 7th from 5 pm to 8 pm \nWe have known Chris Cinque for several years.  She has endured\, along with all of us\, the delay of this show due to Covid-19.  We are pleased the hiatus is over and we are able to offer her work to the community.  About her current paintings\, Chris writes: \nI had to leave my southern home when I was nineteen because I came out as a lesbian to my Catholic family. I headed to the far north where I had never been and no one in my family really knew where I was. I wrote about this in my trilogy of one-woman plays called “Growing Up Queer in America. One of the passages said this:  \n              Exiles know what I know\, what you know too\n              For when we leave our country’s borders and sweet fields\n              We are outcasts from our country\n              We are outcasts from our families\n               We are outcasts from ourselves \nI taught English for almost twenty years to immigrants and refugees and I felt a kinship with many of my students hearing their stories of being forced to leave their homelands. It is an unfortunate and all too common part of the human condition: people being uprooted from all that is familiar for whatever reason: war\, natural catastrophe\, racial violence\, domestic abuse\, poverty. \nOne of the definitions of nostalgia is “homesickness”. When my father\, at age nineteen\, went off to Bootcamp during World War II\, it was the first time he’d ever been away from home. He became physically ill but eventually recovered enough to get shipped off to Europe so he could walk across France shooting Nazis.  \nWhen my great-grandparents\, Salvatore and Rosina\, were forced to move to America because of poverty\, Rosina died at forty-two from a brain hemorrhage and\, I suspect\, domestic violence leaving behind a large family of motherless children.  \nMy family’s stories are magnified and repeated worldwide and throughout history in the endless migrations\, people have been forced into. We are so many of us refugees\, but we are resilient. And that is part of the story as well. Wherever we end up\, we create homes and families and the satisfaction that comes from overcoming hardships and creating better lives for our descendants.  \nThis show attempts to document\, reflect upon\, and honor what it means to have a home\, to lose it\, and to make another to take its place. \nWe will offer a hybrid Gallery Talk [in person and remote] beginning at 7 pm on Tuesday\, May 17th.  Nearer the date of this event\, we will post a link on our website page.\n\n\n\ns

SUMMARY:ACW Club Critique Launch
DESCRIPTION:ACW Launches Club Critique\n3 FREE SCHOLARSHIPS DONATED!\nIntroducing Club Critique! ACW will be starting a critique group for all who are interested in a place for safe but rigorous discussion of their work. You will be able to join the CC on the ACW website and once you have become a member you can start taking part in the critiques of others work. You are expected to attend at least three critiques of your fellow artists each year. Locations will vary and will mostly be in the studio of the artist being critiqued but if you are unable to accommodate a visit to your studio we will help set up a location for you. If you have a publicly placed piece you would like critiqued we can go to that location as well. \nClub Critique is a $100 a year membership program. Special for 2022. We just received an anonymous donation for three free memberships to Club Critique. To qualify for these funds please click here for more information: https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/gritique-minutes/ \nThe first Club Critique meeting will be May 4\, 7-8 PM at Greg Volker’s Studio where we will critique one of his pieces and kick off Club Critique in style with some great wine he just brought back from California! Location is studio #612 California Building\, 2205 California St. NE\, Minneapolis. \nYou do not need to be an artist to join Club Critique! We encourage art writers and reviewers as well as art lovers to join. \nThere are 3 main goals of Club Critique: \n1- Have a place for honest\, open and rigorous critique with the goal of helping each other to make the best work we can.\n2- Elevate our ability to write\, discuss and articulate our works which will improve our quality of proposals\, artist statements\, and other areas where we need to verbalize our works.\n3- Develop and refine critique methodologies and practices to improve Club Critique’s ability to accomplish goal #1 and #2. \nGreg Volker is a sculptor\, potter\, musician and builder. Born in Stuttgart\, Germany and grew up in St Louis Park\, Mn. Attended the University of Minnesota for his BFA and left Minneapolis for San Francisco in 1990 to attend graduate school at San Francisco Art Institute. SUMMARY:Call for Art from Susan Gainen
DESCRIPTION:Call for Art from Susan Gainen\nI was invited to hang a show at the Burnhaven (Burnsville) Library in July & August 2022 which has 150 feet of Walker Display System.  I thought about a solo show for about 15 seconds and then decided to invite ACW artists to join me. More artists. More art. More fun. \nTheme: Whimsy and Joy: it’s what we need. \nNumber of Artists: 5 total\, each gets 30 feet of Walker display.. \nTo apply:  Send an email to susangainen@comcast.net with BURNHAVEN in the subject. Why do you want to join a whimsy/joy show? Attach 3 images. \nDeadline: April 25 \nFrom the Library Staff:  Any art would need to be ready to hang and broadly appropriate for all ages and for a county-owned building. An exhibit could be a collection of work by one artist\, or a group show. We can display information about the artist on the walls. The library can’t sell artworks\, but we can connect buyers to the artists themselves. Pre-pandemic our library averaged about 600 people per day (and we’re getting busy again)\, so this would be a great opportunity to expose your work to lots of new eyes in the community.

SUMMARY:Ramadan Begins
DESCRIPTION:By Laura Mann-Hill  ACW Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator \nCurrently\, Muslims account for about 22% of the world’s population. The community will be fasting from sunup to sundown. Ramadan\, the holiest month of the Muslim calendar. \nRamadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and will fall during the month of April in 2022. The Islamic calendar does not align exactly with the Gregorian calendar\, Ramadan falls at a different time of year\, every year. When thinking about April many people also think about nature and earth month. Many Muslim scholars highlight how the Qur’an illustrates an eco-consciousness that infuses every aspect of life and explains nature as a complete\, complex\, interconnected and interdependent system. Many Indigenous cultures and religions all over the world center nature as an interconnected part of life and existence. \n  \nHere are a few resources: \n  \nhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/23286976 \n  \nhttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/what-is-ramadan-and-when-is-it/ \n  \nhttps://www.intersectionalenvironmentalist.com/ \n  \nhttps://hightowerlowdown.org/article/give-nature-a-seat-at-the-governing-table-rights-of-nature/
