SUMMARY:Finding Healing and Inspiration from Black History
DESCRIPTION:Finding Healing and Inspiration from Black History by Laura Mann Hill -DEI Coordinator \n“This is our national truth: America would not be America without the wealth from Black labor\, without Black striving\, Black ingenuity\, Black resistance.” \n― Nikole Hannah-Jones\, The 1619 Project: Born on the Water \n  \nAs we begin Black History month\, we continue to fight for change in the world in a way that is sustainable\, inclusive\, equitable\, just and makes space for healing. Making art with the community has been my space for healing. I have learned that while I cannot make systems change in isolation\, I can educate myself everyday.  The more I learn about how my ancestors resisted and made change in America\, it gives me strength and affirmation to move forward. We should all look to learn more\, celebrate\, and center Black History today and every day. \n  \nHere are just a few ways to get started: \nEvents: https://www.maahmg.org/event/ \nhttps://pillsburyhouseandtheatre.org/the-bull-jean-stories/ \nhttps://allevents.in/minneapolis/inspired-by-claudette-and-rosa/200023384232316 \nhttps://www.affirmationspace.com/ \nArticle:https://insightcced.medium.com/centering-blackness-the-path-to-economic-liberation-for-all-f6c2c7398281 \nPodcast: https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2020/06/eight-black-history-podcasts \n  \n  \nImage: Million Artist Movement \nBlack History Month Quilting with Million Artist Movement at Golden Thyme \nDates: Feb 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm \nLocation: Golden Thyme Coffee & Cafe 934 Selby Ave\, St Paul\, MN 55104

SUMMARY:Native American Heritage Month: Honor Truth Telling
DESCRIPTION:Honor Truth Telling \nby Laura Mann Hill -ACW D and I Coordinator \nPhoto by Forrest Hill\, shared with permission from Daren Hill\, ACW member \n“Indigenous people are not relics of the past. We are still here\, and we continue to demonstrate our talents and gifts amidst a backdrop of ongoing colonialism and oppression. We are worth celebrating.” —Native Governance Center \nWhen my daughter was 9 years old\, we had many conversations about the way Black\, Indigenous\, and People of Color (BIPOC) were represented in her textbooks\, especially as she learned more about American history and colonization. “Mom\, this is a lie. They should tell us the truth…we can handle it” she said. My daughter is now 12 and attends a school that centers on a social justice curriculum\, but we still have these conversations about text and media she encounters. November is National Native American Heritage Month\, offering all of us an opportunity to embrace truth. As people living in\, Mni Sota Makoce or Minnesota\, we should not only acknowledge that we are on the homeland of the Dakota people; and a home for many other Indigenous nations\, including the Anishinaabe and the Ho-Chunk people. We have the responsibility to move beyond acknowledgments towards actions. We must continue to do the work to dismantle racism and white supremacy as artists and community members to repair the harms of colonization and honor truth-telling. What can we do today to radically change the way future generations speak about the past? \nA few resources to start exploring this month and all year: \nBdote Memory Map: http://bdotememorymap.org/\nDakota Land Map: https://marlenamyl.es/project/dakota-land-map/\nUpcoming Events https://nativegov.org/events/\nReclaiming Native Truth: https://rnt.firstnations.org/\nTruthsgiving: https://www.truthsgiving.org/resources\nLearn about Treaties: https://mn350.org/campaigns/treatypledge/\nBlack Liberation and Indigenous Sovereignty: https://usdac.us/news/2021/9/21/envisioning-black-liberation-and-indigenous-sovereignty\nLand Reparations: https://resourcegeneration.org/land-reparations-indigenous-solidarity-action-guide/

SUMMARY:July 4th - Reflections on a Hypocritical Holiday
DESCRIPTION:July – Reflections on a Hypocritical Holiday \nBy Laura Mann-Hill -ACW Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator \nThe current moment we find ourselves\, from the lens of diversity\, equity\, and inclusion is full of tension\, complexity\, and contradictions. As we push for change to undo systems of oppression such as white supremacy and patriarchy\, we find the other side is pushing back just as hard. In July\, many people celebrate “Independence Day” but if you have ever read or listened to\, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” by Frederick Douglass\, spoken on July 5th\, 1852\, we are reminded of the pain and hypocrisy of the holiday. \n“Are the great principles of political freedom and of natural justice\, embodied in that Declaration of Independence\, extended to us? ….your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciations of tyrants…your shouts of liberty and equality…..are to him [enslaved people]\, mere bombast\, fraud\, deception\, impiety\, and hypocrisy.” \nThere is still much to critique in the speech\, including the use of the word “man” to describe people\, but many truths in his words and an important call to action. How can we truly achieve equity and equality on land built on stolen land with stolen labor? Since stepping foot on this continent\, colonizers have attempted to assimilate or erase Indigenous people\, lands\, and culture while attempting to enslave people from Africa and assert dominance over people’s bodies and autonomy. \nThe US continues to deny basic human rights to large swaths of people based on gender\, race\, sexuality\, ability\, and other aspects of our intersectional identities. \nWe cannot remain complacent in our role as artists and humans and find ways as a community to support and uplift and better care for each other. We must tap into our creativity and imagination as we continue to fight for equality and access to basic human rights. \n“You can’t help it. An artist’s duty\, as far as I’m concerned\, is to reflect the times.” \n\nNina Simone\n\nTo hear Nina Simone sing\, Mississippi Goddam:\nhttps://youtu.be/LJ25-U3jNWM \nTo hear the full speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July” by Frederick Douglass\, read by actor James Earl Jones:\nhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O0baE_CtU08&feature=youtu.be

SUMMARY:Ramadan Begins
DESCRIPTION:By Laura Mann-Hill  ACW Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator \nCurrently\, Muslims account for about 22% of the world’s population. The community will be fasting from sunup to sundown. Ramadan\, the holiest month of the Muslim calendar. \nRamadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and will fall during the month of April in 2022. The Islamic calendar does not align exactly with the Gregorian calendar\, Ramadan falls at a different time of year\, every year. When thinking about April many people also think about nature and earth month. Many Muslim scholars highlight how the Qur’an illustrates an eco-consciousness that infuses every aspect of life and explains nature as a complete\, complex\, interconnected and interdependent system. Many Indigenous cultures and religions all over the world center nature as an interconnected part of life and existence. \n  \nHere are a few resources: \n  \nhttp://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/23286976 \n  \nhttps://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/0/what-is-ramadan-and-when-is-it/ \n  \nhttps://www.intersectionalenvironmentalist.com/ \n  \nhttps://hightowerlowdown.org/article/give-nature-a-seat-at-the-governing-table-rights-of-nature/
