SUMMARY:Breathe (a ritual to undo) - Opening
DESCRIPTION:Breathe (a ritual to undo)\n\n\n\nBreathe: A Ritual to Undo\, a new play by Ashawnti Sakina Ford.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin us for the world premiere of Ashawnti Sakina Ford’s ritual performance piece\, Breathe: A Ritual to Undo. \nDirected by Antonio Duke. \nPerformed by Alexis Camille\, Sterling Miller & Dana Lee Thompson. \nOriginal Music by Umar Malik \nDesigners: Mitchell Frazier & Bayou Bay; Stage Manager: Arianna Diaz-Celon \nPerformed at the Paradise Community Hall at the Capri Theater. \nThis performance was commissioned in 2020 as part of Exposed Brick Theatre’s Through Our Eyes series. Ford described it this way: A moment of pause\, a collective breath\, a call to shake things up (in our bodies) so that we can continue a fight that was started long ago and may continue long after us. This ritual is intended to heal by allowing all of our emotions to flow in\, out\, and around us. A renewed sense of fight is what I hope can emerge by listening and performing this piece. \nMillion Artist Movement will partner with Exposed Brick Theatre at each performance to provide Power Tree Quilting starting one hour prior to the performance. \nSchedule is: \nFriday\, May 13: Quilting begins at 6:30; Performance at 7:30 \nSaturday\, May 14: Quilting begins at 6:30; Performance at 7:30 \nSunday\, May 15: Quilting begins at 1:00; Performance at 2:00 \nThe performance is approximatley 45 minutes. \nThis current Covid Policy at the Capri Theater is as follows:Masks are required at all indoor events at the Capri\, except while actively eating or drinking. Non-cloth masks\, such as N95\, KN95\, KF94 and surgical masks\, are recommended.

SUMMARY:Home: Nostalgia & Chaos - Chris Cinque (Opening)
DESCRIPTION:Home: Nostalgia & Chaos\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHome: Nostalgia and Chao \n\n\n\nNew collages and paintings by Chris Cinque\nMay 4-31\nOpening Reception – Saturday\, May 7th from 5 pm to 8 pm \nWe have known Chris Cinque for several years.  She has endured\, along with all of us\, the delay of this show due to Covid-19.  We are pleased the hiatus is over and we are able to offer her work to the community.  About her current paintings\, Chris writes: \nI had to leave my southern home when I was nineteen because I came out as a lesbian to my Catholic family. I headed to the far north where I had never been and no one in my family really knew where I was. I wrote about this in my trilogy of one-woman plays called “Growing Up Queer in America. One of the passages said this:  \n              Exiles know what I know\, what you know too\n              For when we leave our country’s borders and sweet fields\n              We are outcasts from our country\n              We are outcasts from our families\n               We are outcasts from ourselves \nI taught English for almost twenty years to immigrants and refugees and I felt a kinship with many of my students hearing their stories of being forced to leave their homelands. It is an unfortunate and all too common part of the human condition: people being uprooted from all that is familiar for whatever reason: war\, natural catastrophe\, racial violence\, domestic abuse\, poverty. \nOne of the definitions of nostalgia is “homesickness”. When my father\, at age nineteen\, went off to Bootcamp during World War II\, it was the first time he’d ever been away from home. He became physically ill but eventually recovered enough to get shipped off to Europe so he could walk across France shooting Nazis.  \nWhen my great-grandparents\, Salvatore and Rosina\, were forced to move to America because of poverty\, Rosina died at forty-two from a brain hemorrhage and\, I suspect\, domestic violence leaving behind a large family of motherless children.  \nMy family’s stories are magnified and repeated worldwide and throughout history in the endless migrations\, people have been forced into. We are so many of us refugees\, but we are resilient. And that is part of the story as well. Wherever we end up\, we create homes and families and the satisfaction that comes from overcoming hardships and creating better lives for our descendants.  \nThis show attempts to document\, reflect upon\, and honor what it means to have a home\, to lose it\, and to make another to take its place. \nWe will offer a hybrid Gallery Talk [in person and remote] beginning at 7 pm on Tuesday\, May 17th.  Nearer the date of this event\, we will post a link on our website page.\n\n\n\ns

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Material and Media Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Material and Media Exploration\nWork by MCAD Foundation Studies Students\nMarch 4-30\, 2022\nOpening Reception – Monday\, March 7th from 5pm to 8pm\n(light food and drinks provided) \nFor several years in the recent past\, we have been pleased and honored to host an MCAD Foundations Drawing show in our gallery. Covid-19 introduced a hiatus to that gallery practice a couple of years ago. Now\, we are happy to resume that series of shows\, this time featuring the work of all the genres addressed in the Foundations Program. Expect to see not only the more traditional 2D paintings and drawings\, but also 3D work on pedestals and medias pieces on screens placed around the gallery. Another important aspect to note\, all MCAD students take the Foundations classes\, regardless of their intended area of interest or focus. \nOne of the established goals of the Foundation Program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD)\, is to experiment with concepts\, materials and techniques\, and to build skill-sets in a variety of making processes. Most importantly\, the program encourages students to embrace risk-taking as an essential element of the creative process. This exhibition is a celebration of a selection of student work produced in the first semester (fall 2021) of the Foundation Studies Program at MCAD. Works produced range from 2D to 3D to 4D\, with various media and techniques\, all showing the versatility\, creativity\, and tenacity of the students as a whole. \n[Though restrictions\, mandates and advisories are slowly being relaxed\, Covid-19 is still with us\, and we request mask be worn for all gallery visits.]

SUMMARY:Natalie McGuire: Group Exhibition at Praxis Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Natalie McGuire will have her infrared image Seeds Planted In a Group Exhibition at Praxis Gallery\, the 2nd Annual artist member showcase. \nExhibition dates: February 19th through March 5th\, 2022\nLocation: 2637 27th Ave S\, Minneapolis\, MN 55406 \nWebsite https://www.praxisphotocenter.org/\npersonal website: https://nmcguirestudio.com/ \nThe selected image is Seeds Planted. \nNatalie says: \n“Road trips recharge my soul and fuel my creativity. On this road trip\, I headed to Sleepy Eye\, MN where they have the nicest owners of Sleepy Eye stain glass shop. The drive takes a few hours to get there\, and I enjoy taking the single-lane county highways. The landscape is dotted with farmhouses\, newly planted crops\, gently rolling hills\, small creeks with forest groves. I was blessed with Bob Ross kind of clouds\, Horses greeting me to say good morning. \nThis scene captivated my eyes as the hint of lime green sprouts just breaking the jet-black soil accompanied the Seeds Mother Nature planted earlier in the Spring.”
