DESCRIPTION:“INSOMNIAC” by Nina Martine Robinson\nOpens at Susan Hensel Gallery \nMINNEAPOLIS\, Minnesota — Susan Hensel Gallery welcomes back fiber artist Nina Martine Robinson for her latest solo exhibition INSOMNIAC. \nThe show opens in the windows at 3441 Cedar Ave S\, Minneapolis\, and online on July 20 and runs through September 15\, 2022\, celebrating neurodivergence through crocheted figures. The brightly colored pieces represent various aspects and experiences on the spectrum\, uncovering and celebrating the inner lives of people with autism. \nOf particular interest to the artist is the idea of “masking” — a prevalent behavior among young girls with autism where they hide their symptomatic traits to appear neurotypical. “Masking” leads many girls to go misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. \nThe crocheted pieces in INSOMNIAC uphold and celebrate the odd\, unexpected\, and surprising forms it uses to explore this hidden interior life for neurodivergent people. The balance between the figurative and the abstract makes the work a captivating example of fiber art. \nINSOMNIAC seeks to express inner states and casts of emotions. This is a universe filled with cartoon-like characters in three dimensions\, happy and optimistic representations of a set of feelings and a way of experiencing the world.  The effervescence of the art makes it a highly positive experience\, focused on the delight in and acknowledgment of our neurodiversity. This has been a mission for the artist since she began researching autism spectrum disorders after her son was diagnosed. She now uses her textile art as a way to create awareness and greater acceptance of neurodivergent people. \nA St. Paul artist\, Robinson has a long history with the world of sewing\, one that runs like a thread through her own experience of family. She was taught by her mother as a young girl\, but after leaving school\, she wouldn’t sew again until her first son was born. This included making stuffed animals and dolls — the first bud of Robinson’s journey into fiber arts. \nShe eventually returned to school to get a BA in 2011\, and since then she has appeared in many selected exhibitions and collaborative projects. This includes a 2020 appearance at Susan Hensel Gallery with her window exhibit Neurotangle. \nThe Susan Hensel Gallery is excited to welcome back Robinson and her fascinating work. The gallery focuses on compelling objects\, meaningful use of materials\, and engaging sculpture. Cedar Lake Road\nMinneapolis\, MN 55416 \nThe current Hebrew year\, 5782\, is a Shmita year. Shmita means “release” in Hebrew and refers to the seventh year in a seven-year cycle (like the seven-day cycle culminating in Shabbat). According to the Torah\, during the seventh year\, God commands us to let the land rest\, release debts\, resolve disputes\, and open our hands and hearts to those in need. The Shmita Project asks us to consider how do we bring this tradition alive in an era when we no longer rely on the rhythms and harvest of our fields to survive. Through these years\, we have grown in our abilities\, sometimes altered artistic direction\, or just learned to explore new ideas as we shared our creative process with one another. \nThis exhibit celebrates our long-term connection with one another. These works illustrate how art was a diversion from the pandemic stresses as we retreated into studios to work alone. Some of us focused on adhering to the artistic paths on which we began; others deviated into a new artistic direction. We all have been fed by the creative force and continue to honor our connection to it and to one another.

The group show is scheduled to have Opening Night activities during First Thursday\, May 5\, 2022 from 5:00 – 9:00 PM at the Northrup King Building third floor gallery (studio 332). Open Mike for poets starts at 5:PM with a short talk about Brothers Keeper by Nikki McComb at 6:00 PM. At 7:00\, poets TBA will read selected works. \nThe show will combine the poetry of Ashley Richardson and visual art responses to her poems. The intention is to spark conversations about violence against Black bodies\, both verbally and physically\, from micro aggressions to police brutality; as well as violence against trans bodies\, women’s bodies\, and other intersections of the Black identity. With a deep belief that Black lives\, voices\, and narratives matter\, poet and curator\, Ashley Richardson\, has organized “Blood on the Pavement” as a month-long exhibit (May 5 – May 25). \nClosing Night is May 25. At 6:30 the silent auction for noted painter\, Owen Brown’s\, response to the George Floyd murder\, called On George Floyd will end. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to a nonprofit TBA. \nThe show will feature the following local artists responding to Richardson’s poems. DESCRIPTION:Breathe (a ritual to undo)\n\n\n\nBreathe: A Ritual to Undo\, a new play by Ashawnti Sakina Ford.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin us for the world premiere of Ashawnti Sakina Ford’s ritual performance piece\, Breathe: A Ritual to Undo. \nDirected by Antonio Duke. \nPerformed by Alexis Camille\, Sterling Miller & Dana Lee Thompson. \nOriginal Music by Umar Malik \nDesigners: Mitchell Frazier & Bayou Bay; Stage Manager: Arianna Diaz-Celon \nPerformed at the Paradise Community Hall at the Capri Theater. \nThis performance was commissioned in 2020 as part of Exposed Brick Theatre’s Through Our Eyes series. Ford described it this way: A moment of pause\, a collective breath\, a call to shake things up (in our bodies) so that we can continue a fight that was started long ago and may continue long after us. This ritual is intended to heal by allowing all of our emotions to flow in\, out\, and around us. A renewed sense of fight is what I hope can emerge by listening and performing this piece. \nMillion Artist Movement will partner with Exposed Brick Theatre at each performance to provide Power Tree Quilting starting one hour prior to the performance. \nSchedule is: \nFriday\, May 13: Quilting begins at 6:30; Performance at 7:30 \nSaturday\, May 14: Quilting begins at 6:30; Performance at 7:30 \nSunday\, May 15: Quilting begins at 1:00; Performance at 2:00 \nThe performance is approximatley 45 minutes. \nThis current Covid Policy at the Capri Theater is as follows:Masks are required at all indoor events at the Capri\, except while actively eating or drinking. Non-cloth masks\, such as N95\, KN95\, KF94 and surgical masks\, are recommended.

DESCRIPTION:Home: Nostalgia & Chaos\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHome: Nostalgia and Chao \n\n\n\nNew collages and paintings by Chris Cinque\nMay 4-31\nOpening Reception – Saturday\, May 7th from 5 pm to 8 pm \nWe have known Chris Cinque for several years.  She has endured\, along with all of us\, the delay of this show due to Covid-19.  We are pleased the hiatus is over and we are able to offer her work to the community.  About her current paintings\, Chris writes: \nI had to leave my southern home when I was nineteen because I came out as a lesbian to my Catholic family. I headed to the far north where I had never been and no one in my family really knew where I was. I wrote about this in my trilogy of one-woman plays called “Growing Up Queer in America. One of the passages said this:  \n              Exiles know what I know\, what you know too\n              For when we leave our country’s borders and sweet fields\n              We are outcasts from our country\n              We are outcasts from our families\n               We are outcasts from ourselves \nI taught English for almost twenty years to immigrants and refugees and I felt a kinship with many of my students hearing their stories of being forced to leave their homelands. It is an unfortunate and all too common part of the human condition: people being uprooted from all that is familiar for whatever reason: war\, natural catastrophe\, racial violence\, domestic abuse\, poverty. \nOne of the definitions of nostalgia is “homesickness”. When my father\, at age nineteen\, went off to Bootcamp during World War II\, it was the first time he’d ever been away from home. He became physically ill but eventually recovered enough to get shipped off to Europe so he could walk across France shooting Nazis.  \nWhen my great-grandparents\, Salvatore and Rosina\, were forced to move to America because of poverty\, Rosina died at forty-two from a brain hemorrhage and\, I suspect\, domestic violence leaving behind a large family of motherless children.  \nMy family’s stories are magnified and repeated worldwide and throughout history in the endless migrations\, people have been forced into. We are so many of us refugees\, but we are resilient. And that is part of the story as well. Wherever we end up\, we create homes and families and the satisfaction that comes from overcoming hardships and creating better lives for our descendants.  \nThis show attempts to document\, reflect upon\, and honor what it means to have a home\, to lose it\, and to make another to take its place. \nWe will offer a hybrid Gallery Talk [in person and remote] beginning at 7 pm on Tuesday\, May 17th.  Nearer the date of this event\, we will post a link on our website page.\n\n\n\ns

DESCRIPTION:Think\, Discuss\, and Disrupt! \nThe upcoming Art To Change the World art exhibit\, “Blood on the Pavement\,” aims to help Minnesota communities think\, discuss\, and disrupt! The group show is scheduled to have Opening Night activities during First Thursday\, May 5\, 2022 from 5:00 – 9:00 PM at the Northrup King Building third floor gallery (studio 332). Open Mike for poets starts at 5:00 PM with a short talk about Brothers Keeper by Nikki McComb at 6:00 PM. At 7:00\, poets TBA will read selected works. \nThe show will combine the poetry of Ashley Richardson and visual art responses to her poems. The intention is to spark conversations about violence against Black bodies\, both verbally and physically\, from micro aggressions to police brutality; as well as violence against trans bodies\, women’s bodies\, and other intersections of the Black identity. With a deep belief that Black lives\, voices\, and narratives matter\, poet and curator\, Ashley Richardson\, has organized “Blood on the Pavement” as a month-long exhibit (May 5 – May 25). \nClosing Night is May 25. At 6:30 the silent auction for noted painter\, Owen Brown’s\, response to the George Floyd murder\, called On George Floyd will end. The proceeds from the auction will be donated to a nonprofit TBA. \nThe show will feature the following local artists responding to Richardson’s poems. They will be providing remarks on May 25 at 7:00: Drew Hammond\, Azania Tripp\, Briauna Williams\, Lyle Ferguson\, Sebastian Rivera Cintron\, Ariana Carbajal\, Cory Favre with unique appearances of works by Nikki McComb and Owen Brown. DESCRIPTION:Team Euphoria \nArt to Change the World’s Coaching Project Team Euphoria proudly presents the Euphoria Short Works Festival! \nProject Manager Lauren Edson and Coaches Susan Hensel and Mark Jelinek have worked together to create a festival focused on celebrating all forms of gender expression. This festival will feature local Minnesota artists\, sharing what gender means to them. From poets to comedians to short films\, there will be a wide variety of unique voices and stories to share with you all. As a gender queer artist\, Project Manager Lauren knows the importance of creating a safe space where one can feel accepted and celebrated for their identity. They hope that this festival will encourage people to learn more about the gender spectrum and embrace the uniqueness and euphoria that comes with expressing one’s truest self.
