SUMMARY:Frances Bates @ Fox Den: White Tiger Inventions
DESCRIPTION:A message from Frances Bates  \nHello ACW\, \nMy name is Frances and I have my first ever solo art show coming up. I have been making art since I was little\, so this is a dream come true. If you are curious why you keep seeing me use a tiger design for everything\, I’ll tell you the story. White tigers specifically have been my favorite animal ever since I can remember. That love of tigers lead me to include it in emails\, social media accounts\, and of course my art workshop. Many of those close to me have been recipients of my art and now I am sharing it with the world. If you want to be part of this momentous occasion\, please come check my work\, or what I like to call White Tiger Inventions\, at the Fox Den in October. \nHope to see you there! \nFrances Bates (She/her) \nfrancesbates22@gmail.com \nfrancesbates22.wixsite.com/portfolio

SUMMARY:October Gallery Show - Homewood Studios (Opening Reception)
DESCRIPTION:OCTOBER GALLERY SHOW – HOMEWOOD STUDIOS \nShow Run: October 7th – October 29th\nOpening Reception: October 7th 2022\, 5:00 to 8:00pm\n2400 Plymouth Ave N\, Minneapolis\, MN 55411\nZoom Gallery Talk: Tuesday\, October 18th\, 7:00 pm Connect to Virtual Talk at:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/4356847453?pwd=SGV2V2FzalZ3NmZvcUZOK3o2ekN4Zz09 \nGallery Hours:\nTuesday 5:00 to 8:00 pm\, Wednesday and Friday 1:00 to 6:00 pm\nSaturday 1:00 to 4:00pm\, Sunday 12:00pm to 4:00pm\nIn the Moment website link:\nhttps://hpcinthemoment.myportfolio.com/ \nThe Homewood Photo Collective\,  founded and curated by Homewood Studios Resident Artist meets monthly to view and comment on members’ work\, discuss trends in photography\, and provide general encouragement and support to each other.  In the past few years\, the group has grown and blossomed\, to the point where now twenty photographers are participating in this current show. \nLarry Risser\, Homewood Photo Collective member\, offers this artist’s statement for the group:\nAs matter is composed of atoms\, so our lives are composed of moments. And\, as we may give little thought to the motions of atoms\, so we often fill our days\, months\, and years with only passing notice of the moments that define the arc of our lives.  It is when major events stop us short\, cutting off the cascade of daily moments\, that we pause to reflect on the moments of joy and loss\, success and setback\, hope and despair that have filled our lives. \nWith this exhibit\, we invite you the viewer to pause with us and consider the larger significance of the moment that the photographer has caught and let that image resonate with moments in your own life. \nRegular subscribers\, please note the Sunday hours added for this show.

SUMMARY:Homewood Studios - September Gallery Show
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Studios SEPTEMBER GALLERY SHOW \n2400 Plymouth Ave N\, Minneapolis\, MN 55411 \n\n“NEGATIVE CAPABILITY”\nMarion Angelica\, ceramics\nSeptember 2 through 30\, 2022\n\nClosing Reception / Gallery Talk – Friday\, September 30\, 6 pm to 9 pm\nRomantic poet John Keats wrote of the ability to suspend judgment about something in order to learn more about it\, implying the ability to resist explaining away what we do not understand. He called this negative capability. Recently\, our September exhibiting artist\, Marini Angelica\, has been creating ceramics work laced with open spaces. She is not sure why\, but she has chosen to trust the impulse\, to go with it. The work in this show\, full of the hallmarks of Angelica’s work – intriguing surfaces\, unexceed shapes\, graceful line\,s and surprising color – carried us\, with her\, into these inviting spaces of not knowing. \nRead More: https://homewoodstudios.com

SUMMARY:Picture Gallery of the Soul - Opening Night
DESCRIPTION:Katherine E. Nash Gallery\n\nOur Own Herman Milligan presents A Picture Gallery of the Soul\nSeptember 13 – December 10\, 2022\n\nAbout the Exhibition\nThe Katherine E. Nash Gallery presents A Picture Gallery of the Soul\, a group exhibition of over 100 Black American artists whose practice incorporates the photographic medium. Sampling a range of photographic expressions from traditional photography to mixed media and conceptual art and spanning a timeframe that includes the 19th\, 20th\, and 21st centuries\, the exhibition honors\, celebrates\, investigates\, and interprets Black history\, culture\, and politics in the United States. \nFrom the daguerreotypes made by Jules Lion in New Orleans in 1840 to the Instagram post of the Baltimore Uprising made by Devin Allen in 2015\, photography has chronicled Black American life and Black Americans have defined the possibilities of photography. Frederick Douglass\, a former enslaved person\, and nationally prominent abolitionist recognized the quick\, easy and inexpensive reproducibility of photography. He presciently developed a theoretical framework for understanding the implications of photography on public discourse in a series of four lectures. The exhibition title comes from Douglass’ Lecture on Pictures\, delivered in Boston in 1861 during the Civil War. \nRelated Events \nA companion exhibition of photographs made by Gordon Parks High School students will be on view from September 13 – October 8 in the Quarter Gallery at Regis Center for Art. Learn more about the exhibition. \nVirtual Keynote | Thursday\, September 15 | 6:30 pm | Online\nPresentation with Prof. Deborah Willis\, New York University \nRegistration required: https://z.umn.edu/Prof_Deborah_Willis \nOpening Program | Thursday\, September 22 | 6:00 – 7:00 pm | InFlux Space\, Regis Center for Art \nPresentation with the exhibition curators and visiting scholar lecture \nMining the Archive of Black Life and Culture\, Prof. Cheryl Finley\, Cornell University\nRegistration required: https://z.umn.edu/RegisRSVP \nPublic Reception | Thursday\, September 22 | 7:00 – 9:00 pm | Katherine E. SUMMARY:Insomniac - Nina Martine Robinson
DESCRIPTION:“INSOMNIAC” by Nina Martine Robinson\nOpens at Susan Hensel Gallery \nMINNEAPOLIS\, Minnesota — Susan Hensel Gallery welcomes back fiber artist Nina Martine Robinson for her latest solo exhibition INSOMNIAC. \nThe show opens in the windows at 3441 Cedar Ave S\, Minneapolis\, and online on July 20 and runs through September 15\, 2022\, celebrating neurodivergence through crocheted figures. The brightly colored pieces represent various aspects and experiences on the spectrum\, uncovering and celebrating the inner lives of people with autism. \nOf particular interest to the artist is the idea of “masking” — a prevalent behavior among young girls with autism where they hide their symptomatic traits to appear neurotypical. “Masking” leads many girls to go misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. \nThe crocheted pieces in INSOMNIAC uphold and celebrate the odd\, unexpected\, and surprising forms it uses to explore this hidden interior life for neurodivergent people. The balance between the figurative and the abstract makes the work a captivating example of fiber art. \nINSOMNIAC seeks to express inner states and casts of emotions. This is a universe filled with cartoon-like characters in three dimensions\, happy and optimistic representations of a set of feelings and a way of experiencing the world.  The effervescence of the art makes it a highly positive experience\, focused on the delight in and acknowledgment of our neurodiversity. This has been a mission for the artist since she began researching autism spectrum disorders after her son was diagnosed. She now uses her textile art as a way to create awareness and greater acceptance of neurodivergent people. \nA St. Paul artist\, Robinson has a long history with the world of sewing\, one that runs like a thread through her own experience of family. She was taught by her mother as a young girl\, but after leaving school\, she wouldn’t sew again until her first son was born. This included making stuffed animals and dolls — the first bud of Robinson’s journey into fiber arts. \nShe eventually returned to school to get a BA in 2011\, and since then she has appeared in many selected exhibitions and collaborative projects. This includes a 2020 appearance at Susan Hensel Gallery with her window exhibit Neurotangle. \nThe Susan Hensel Gallery is excited to welcome back Robinson and her fascinating work. The gallery focuses on compelling objects\, meaningful use of materials\, and engaging sculpture. It is a gallery where experimental ideas and works of the hand join to create unique sensory experiences. \nVisit Artsy.net/susan-hensel-gallery to view Robinson’s INSOMNIAC beginning July 20 through September 15\, 2022.

SUMMARY:Owen Brown @ Sabes Center
DESCRIPTION:Owen Brown will be showing a quadriptych\, “Often I am Permitted to Return to a Meadow\,” at the Sabes Center \nThe opening is June 30th\, 7 to 9\, and the show will be on for over a month.  \n4330 S. Cedar Lake Road\nMinneapolis\, MN 55416 \nThe current Hebrew year\, 5782\, is a Shmita year. Shmita means “release” in Hebrew and refers to the seventh year in a seven-year cycle (like the seven-day cycle culminating in Shabbat). According to the Torah\, during the seventh year\, God commands us to let the land rest\, release debts\, resolve disputes\, and open our hands and hearts to those in need. The Shmita Project asks us to consider how do we bring this tradition alive in an era when we no longer rely on the rhythms and harvest of our fields to survive. Featuring submissions to Hazon’s Shmita Project\, this multimedia exhibit showcases artwork from all over the country with related programming that will engage the community with the art and provide opportunities to gain their own personal insights about shmita.   Read More:  https://www.sabesjcc.org/about/jcc-collaboration/

SUMMARY:Opening Reception @ Homewood Studios
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Studios\nEntertainment/recreation: distraction\, pastime\, pleasure\, gratification\, relaxation\nthe alteration\, digression\, turning\, variation\nChanging course: departure\, detour\, deviation\,\nDiversion: Definitions and synonyms \nLaura DuFrane Murphey\, Judith Jopp\, John Stumme\, Debra Ripp\, Linda Snoufffer\, and Shirl Chouinard \nJune 3-25    Opening Reception – Friday\, June 3\, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm \nGallery/Artists’ Talk – Tuesday\, June 21 beginning at 7 pm \n\n2400 Plymouth Ave N\, Minneapolis\, MN 55411 \nTo open our summer season of shows\, we offer an enticing and diverse group of artists who\, after meeting each other in a class taught by artist Deborah Foutch\, have continued to work with\, encourage and support each other for several years.  One of the groups\, Laura DuFrane Murphy\, is one of our resident studio artists.\nAbout their work\, they write: \nOur individual visual art is diverse—we all have different visions even at times when we use similar mediums or explore similar subjects. Through these years\, we have grown in our abilities\, sometimes altered artistic direction\, or just learned to explore new ideas as we shared our creative process with one another. \nThis exhibit celebrates our long-term connection with one another. These works illustrate how art was a diversion from the pandemic stresses as we retreated into studios to work alone. Some of us focused on adhering to the artistic paths on which we began; others deviated into a new artistic direction. We all have been fed by the creative force and continue to honor our connection to it and to one another.
