SUMMARY:Opening: "inside my hands: the covid year" - dougie padilla
DESCRIPTION:SEPTEMBER’S GALLERY SHOW AT HOMEWOOD STUDIOS \n  \n“inside my hands: the covid year”\ndrawings and poems by dougie padilla \nOpening reception – Friday\, September 10th from 6pm to 9pm \ndougie will offer a poetry reading on Tuesday\, September 28th at 7pm. \n  \n  \nOur third show since reopening the gallery after Covid continues artwork that expresses itself in vibrant colors\, exuberant gestures and inviting vistas.  The drawings and poetry broadsides by dougie padilla do just that.  As his title suggests\, the work presented was produced during our time of covid and seem an antidote to the sequestering and darkness we all experienced. \n  \nAbout his work\, padilla writes: \n1) during the covid year I went dynamite creative nuts more than ever and painted and drew and wrote poems intensely and incessantly and obsessively about this quite insane and oft delightful world we live in\, and  \n  \n2) this show of drawings and poems are just the tip of that iceberg. \nPlease note:  Plymouth Avenue\, where Homewood Studios lives\, is currently undergoing a complete rebuilding and is more or less impassable.  Please go to our website – www.homewoodstudiods.com – for current driving and parking directions.

SUMMARY:Forgotten Beacons: Artist Reception and Public Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:Artist: Jayson Randall \nEvent: Artist Reception and public unveiling\nDate/Time: Thursday\, September 16\, 2021\, 6-8pm\nLocation: University of Minnesota – Larson Gallery\, 2017 Buford Avenue\, #25-A. St Paul\, MN 55108 \nEvent Link: https://www.jaysonrandall.com/events.html \nEvent Description: In-person reception party \nTitle of Artwork Displayed: Artist reception party and release of two new original interactive works of art \nPrice: This event is free and open to the public \n  \nArtwork Description: \nThe Paul Whitney Larson Gallery at the University of Minnesota has been transformed to accommodate the interactive artwork of Minnesota based experimental artist Jayson Randall. \nThe gallery lights have been dimmed to accentuate the illumination of the art and the pieces are spaced out to allow for individual exploration. \nNormally\, gallery guests are not allowed to touch or interact with the artwork; \nForgotten Beacons is different. \nMany of the works of art react to external stimulation. \nJayson Randall encourages guests to interact with his artwork\, by pressing buttons on some pieces and by making noises at others. \nFrom August 26 thru September 24\, 2021\, several of Jayson’s unique works of art will be on display during regular gallery hours as well as for an artist’s reception on September 16\, 2021\, from 6-8 pm. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n  \n“When I close my eyes\, I see bright colors.” \nThrough Jayson Randall’s brilliant interplay of light and shadow in art\, “Forgotten Beacons” illustrates the relationship between the useful and forgotten. Like beacons in the dark\, his work expresses how discarded items call out as they are encountered. He preserves stories and gives new life to those forgotten through the use of technology. Industrial materials are combined with interactive electronics as the viewer is engaged to participate in the functionality of the finished work. \nJayson Randall is an award-winning experimental artist who currently resides in Minnesota. \nAwards include the Director’s Award at the WHAM West Gallery in Surprise\, Arizona\, the Best in Show Award at the Re-Purpose Competition in Clear Lake\, Iowa\, and the Special Recognition Award at the 2020 Tenth Anniversary Exhibition at the Light Space Time Gallery in Palm Springs\, California. \nJayson designs and builds complex works of art that fuse technology with illusion. \nWhether creating interactive electronic sculptures\, making innovative films\, or attempting a novel method of painting\, his work bridges the gap between art and science. \nMore Information: \nhttps://www.jaysonrandall.com/ \nand \nhttps://sua.umn.edu/events/forgotten-beacons

SUMMARY:Solidarity Street Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Solidarity Street Gallery \nSeptember 23-25\, 2021\, Payne Avenue – St Paul\, Mni Sota Makoce \nA one-of-a-kind arts and cultural festival centered around justice\, equity and solidarity. \nThe SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY is a three-day art and cultural festival along Payne Avenue\, held this year September 23-25. All are invited and encouraged to participate. It aims to bring together artists\, performers\, poets\, entrepreneurs\, civic leaders\, and the local community for important conversations about justice and equity. \n  \nSOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2021 follows the success of last year’s event\, which sought to unite the community amid the isolation and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a national reckoning with racial injustice. We find solidarity in coming together as a neighborhood and business community through art\, performance\, and poetry\, and jointly engaging in the search for solutions to a fractured society. This year’s event will focus on the topics of Indigenous Sovereignty & Environmental Justice\, centered on Native voices. The community can participate in the dialogue on these topics through curated art exhibits\, music & performances\, community and children’s activities\, and an eco-park that highlights local environmental innovations. \n \nSOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY is an open invitation for everyone to celebrate and appreciate the multitude of cultural\, racial\, and ethnic communities who call the Eastside home. This year’s intentional focus on the Native community is possible through partnership with Oyate Hotanin (“Voice of the People”) who will collaborate on a large-scale art installation\, performances\, and curating gallery exhibits. The festival will highlight Native sacred sites\, history\, and traditions\, as well as explore modern culture and identity of Dakota and other local Native people. We will explore key ideas of Cognitive Justice and recognize the plurality of knowledge forms which coexist. Our eco-exhibit looks to inspire event visitors to envision a ‘Just Transition’ to responsible and sustainable environmental stewardship as well as preservation of traditional lands and sacred sites. \n \nOur SOLIDARITY STREET GALLERY 2021 festival welcomes artists from all backgrounds to share their vision in our gallery spaces and performance stages along Payne Ave\, in partnership with the Eastside business community. There will be public calls for artists and performers to participate. There will also be a public call for vendors\, to sell food as well as arts & crafts in street-side marketplaces. Last but not least\, there will a call for volunteers from the community. They will be playing a critical role in making this entire festival possible. \nSee link for more info: https://www.solidaritystreetgallery.org/

SUMMARY:Frame Your Rights Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:#FrameYourRights Exhibition focusing on Voting\, Reproductive Rights\, Policing and other social justice topics will be staged. \nCommittee Layl McDill\, Barbara Bridges\, Cory Favre\, Nina Robinson\, Natalie McGuire\, not pictured: Deb Ripp\, Lucienne Schroepfer\n\nExhibiting: Cory Favre\, Ari Moss\, Rebecca David\,  Natalie McGuire \n\nNov 4-7\, 2021\, During Art this Way show  Location: Solar Arts Building\, Address: 711 NE 15th Ave\, Minneapolis\, MN 55413\nEvent hours:\n11-4 5-9 pm\n11-5 5-9 pm\n11-5 noon – 8 pm\n11-6 noon – 4 pm  Details: \nACW leader\, Natalie McGuire\, submits her unique photography merging into her mosaic frame works to galleries all over the country. The work\, Bridge to Wonder\, was accepted into the exhibition at the Arcadia Art Show in Tyler\, Texas. When Texas passed the law denying the marginalized their reproductive freedom (the wealthy can travel across state lines)\, Natalie felt compelled to take action.  She wrote to the curator of the exhibit that\, respectfully\, she could not send her art into a state which would support such a trampling of “the right to choose”.  Much to her amazement\, the curator of Arcadia Art Show\, Dace Kidd\, responded that she understood and asked if she could install her statement on a black background\, framed\, in the place her work would have been hung. This was an encouraging outcome\, but then so what?  Who is this punishing?  ACW is going two steps further to help those who need reproductive services NOW. \nACW is also aware that a boycott of all things Texan punishes all Texans.  If you would like to help the women currently in crisis\, please send a donation to: The Lilith Fund – supports the right of all Texans to make their own reproductive choices\, regardless of income. https://www.lilithfund.org/donate \nRead More:  https://www.arttochangetheworld.org/10781-2/

SUMMARY:Hold Us Tight - Fresh Eye Gallery show ends
DESCRIPTION:Nina Martine Robinson will be participating in Fresh Eye Gallery’s exhibition with her installation “empty without you”.\nNina’s work explores the ramifications of neurodiversity\, specifically autism spectrum disorder on the family. Many individuals on the spectrum do not like to be touched or hugged. This can lead to dysphoria within the family unit.  My use of sleeves sewn together to form figurative shapes are metaphors for hugging\, individualism and speak to the repetitive behaviors that are synonymous with ASD.\n4238 Nicollet Ave S\, Minneapolis\, MN 55409 \nMore info:     https://www.fresheyegallery.com/

SUMMARY:Anton Treuer: Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:In The Cultural Toolbox: Traditional Ojibwe Living in the Modern World\, Anton Treuer tells stories of one Ojibwe family’s hunting\, gathering\, harvesting\, and cultural ways and beliefs–without violating protected secrets. Following the four seasons of the year and the four seasons of life\, this intimate view of the Ojibwe world reflects a relatable\, modern\, richly experienced connection to the rest of the planet. It also opens up a new way of understanding these living traditions\, which carry thousands of years of cultural knowledge still in the making.\n\n\n\nToday’s Ojibwe people have–against all odds–maintained a dazzling array of deep\, beautiful\, adaptive ways of connecting to the spiritual\, natural\, and human beings around them. Variations in Ojibwe cultural practices are\, of course\, as diverse as their homelands\, which stretch across the Great Lakes\, Canadian shield\, pine forests\, and prairie potholes of four US states and three Canadian provinces. And Ojibwe culture\, like every other culture\, has changed over time. But these variations and changes have always followed a distinct path\, reflecting an identifiably Ojibwe worldview. While the world around\, in\, and connected to Ojibwe spaces continues to envelop myriad cultures and peoples\, the Ojibwe have found a way to stay recognizable to their ancestors. \nDate: Wed.\, Dec 8\, 2021\, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm\nLocation: Mill City Museum\, 704 S. 2nd St.\, Minneapolis\, MN 55407\nContact: 612-341-7582\, mcm@mnhs.org\nCost: Free

SUMMARY:Natalie McGuire: Group Exhibition at Praxis Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Natalie McGuire will have her infrared image Seeds Planted In a Group Exhibition at Praxis Gallery\, the 2nd Annual artist member showcase. \nExhibition dates: February 19th through March 5th\, 2022\nLocation: 2637 27th Ave S\, Minneapolis\, MN 55406 \nWebsite https://www.praxisphotocenter.org/\npersonal website: https://nmcguirestudio.com/ \nThe selected image is Seeds Planted. \nNatalie says: \n“Road trips recharge my soul and fuel my creativity. On this road trip\, I headed to Sleepy Eye\, MN where they have the nicest owners of Sleepy Eye stain glass shop. The drive takes a few hours to get there\, and I enjoy taking the single-lane county highways. The landscape is dotted with farmhouses\, newly planted crops\, gently rolling hills\, small creeks with forest groves. I was blessed with Bob Ross kind of clouds\, Horses greeting me to say good morning. \nThis scene captivated my eyes as the hint of lime green sprouts just breaking the jet-black soil accompanied the Seeds Mother Nature planted earlier in the Spring.”

SUMMARY:Opening Reception - Material and Media Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Material and Media Exploration\nWork by MCAD Foundation Studies Students\nMarch 4-30\, 2022\nOpening Reception – Monday\, March 7th from 5pm to 8pm\n(light food and drinks provided) \nFor several years in the recent past\, we have been pleased and honored to host an MCAD Foundations Drawing show in our gallery. Covid-19 introduced a hiatus to that gallery practice a couple of years ago. Now\, we are happy to resume that series of shows\, this time featuring the work of all the genres addressed in the Foundations Program. Expect to see not only the more traditional 2D paintings and drawings\, but also 3D work on pedestals and medias pieces on screens placed around the gallery. Another important aspect to note\, all MCAD students take the Foundations classes\, regardless of their intended area of interest or focus. \nOne of the established goals of the Foundation Program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD)\, is to experiment with concepts\, materials and techniques\, and to build skill-sets in a variety of making processes. Most importantly\, the program encourages students to embrace risk-taking as an essential element of the creative process. This exhibition is a celebration of a selection of student work produced in the first semester (fall 2021) of the Foundation Studies Program at MCAD. Works produced range from 2D to 3D to 4D\, with various media and techniques\, all showing the versatility\, creativity\, and tenacity of the students as a whole. \n[Though restrictions\, mandates and advisories are slowly being relaxed\, Covid-19 is still with us\, and we request mask be worn for all gallery visits.]
