DESCRIPTION:One River’s Trash is the Same River’s Treasure -Unveiling \n \nTitle: Mississippi River Pearl   2022\nDimensions :  4’ W X 5’ W x 6’ T \nMedia: Mixed Media- Mississippi River Trash and objects with a previous history\nAn Art to Change the World Collaboration: Project Manager Barbara Bridges and group members Frances Bates\, Amáda Márquez Simula\, Greg Volker\, Margo Ashmore\, Annie Merrell\, Neil Granlund\, Katherine Boyce\, Alexis Schramel\, and Kelly Frankenberg. \nJoin us at Homewood Studios\, 2400 Plymouth Avenue North\nMinneapolis\, MN 55411 on November 11 from 5:00-8:00   https://homewoodstudios.com\nThe creation of Pearl was funded by a Mississippi Watershed Management Organization Stewardship Fund Program grant and the project led ten people to meet\, collect trash along the Mississippi and participate in an immersive curriculum unit which was collaboratively developed by Barbara and the participants themselves – including a scientist\, journalist\, mayor\, teachers\, and artists! \nAll participants created this elegant artwork using the found river debris and other hand-constructed and found objects. With one of the goals being to educate people about the plastics we find on our waterways\, they repurposed objects with a history to create a new narrative. Paper was made by Alexis from the debris collected. The quilted seat was commissioned from ACW quiltmaker\, Lucy Schroepfer out of fabric found along the river. John Olson\, from River Keepers\, helped us forage on the west side of the river in his electric pontoon. The project participants met eight times in September and October. \nOpen all 21 drawers! DESCRIPTION:December Gallery Show\nHomewood Studios 2400 Plymouth Ave N\, Minneapolis\, MN 55411\nDon Luce & Ruth Talen Erickson: Painting & Pottery\nDecember 2-23\nOpening Reception – Friday\, December 2 from 5 pm to 8 pm\nGallery Talk – Tuesday\, December 13 beginning at 7 pm \nOur final show of 2022 has long been in the works. Ruth Erickson is a long-time friend of Homewood Studios. Planning for this show began well before Covid put everything on pause\, and we thank both Ruth and Don for their patience. From our point of view\, and we anticipate from that of studio viewers as well\, the wait will be worth it. \nAbout his work\, Don writes: I strive to stimulate people’s curiosity of nature\, deepen their understanding of how nature works and inspire a commitment to protect the natural world. I use painting and drawing to reveal the ecological processes that underlie the landscape and to capture the sense of energy and excitement I feel while exploring nature. \n \nAnd about her work\, Ruth writes: \nThe Japanese concept of “Mengei -the appreciation of the handmade in everyday life”\, has guided my work for over 50 years as a potter. From our point of view\, and we anticipate from that of studio viewers as well\, the wait will be worth it. \nAbout his work\, Don writes: I strive to stimulate people’s curiosity of nature\, deepen their understanding of how nature works and inspire a commitment to protect the natural world. I use painting and drawing to reveal the ecological processes that underlie the landscape and to capture the sense of energy and excitement I feel while exploring nature. \n \nAnd about her work\, Ruth writes: \nThe Japanese concept of “Mengei -the appreciation of the handmade in everyday life”\, has guided my work for over 50 years as a potter. We have a cast of amazing youth performers. The play is based on real-life experiences I had working with Twin Cities youth over the past two years. \nInspired by Claudette and Rosa  \nSonia and some of her classmates struggle navigating issues of race in their everyday life. After learning about Civil Rights Activists Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin\, Sonia is inspired to take a stand in her own life and move them to action. In 1955\, nine months before Rosa Parks became known as a civil rights icon\, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a racially segregated bus in Montgomery\, Alabama. Claudette’s story of resistance and her relationship with Rosa reveals the role she played in sparking a movement for racial justice. \nThe show runs February 10-February 26\, 2023.
